I set my alarm for 2:00 in the morning. Why? Because Earth will pass through the debris left by a comet, and there's a possibility of a kick-ass meteor shower.
I hope it's not cloudy.
Update:
I woke at 2:00 am, went outside, and was rewarded with a sky completely overcast. I spent a few minutes watching, just in case the shower was splendid enough to allow a few meteors to appear below the clouds, and finally gave up.
Was it wasted time? Nope. No time is wasted in doing something you enjoy.
My inner nerd had me napping this afternoon so I could stay up to see if the debris shower would be visible here. If the street lights aren't too bright, I might get a glimpse from my window.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, on a hot summer night, I was standing in the front yard, when I thought I caught a glimpse of seagulls flying in formation.
DeleteI turned my head, and was rewarded with a large meteor breaking into smaller pieces. As I watched, the half dozen fragments raced across the night sky.
How cool is that! I have only ever seen an occasional "shooting star." My consolation prize was northern lights displays when I lived in the northern part of this state. I once got my young children out of bed in the middle of the night, bundled them up in snowsuits and quilts and took them outside (winter time) to watch the green lights dancing across the sky. Those are incredible!

ReplyDeleteI've seen one good meteor shower. I watched for about an hour, and was rewarded with about one meteor per minute.
DeleteOK, I also set the alarm and 3am, stumbled downstairs, wandered out to the backyard and stood staring at the heavens. I gave it about 2 minutes. I thought I saw a herd of dinosaurs grazing on a passing asteroid, but it might have been just a passing satellite. Oh well.
